I agree with I agree with the maintenance but putting a bevel on the backside it's not a good recommendation in my book. Also single draws across the whole blade is more efficient it gives you better control, short strokes and circular Strokes are not necessary. After about 10 strokes sight the edge to see your progress. Why waste any more metal than you have too!
Thanks Steve. I know sharpening techniques are dicey as best. I didn't back bevel my knives (either bevel up or down) for years, keeping the back flat. Adding it allowed for more consistent sharpening in a controlled manner. And I got better results sweeping into and out of cuts...especially on bevel up knifes with a hollow grind.
I'm sure Pete's book touches on it. It made an immediate difference on my bevel up knives, making it easier to sweep into cuts. I haven't noticed much change in the feel of the bevel down....
This works wonders. I had my drawknife sharp, like a chisel and Andy shared this approach with the class. Instant improvement for me!
thanks David
I've been doing this since you showed me during class! Super helpful to have a quick tune-up method for procrastinators like myself
Thanks Keaton. Hope you're staying cool in the shop right now.....And good luck on the next version of the Windsor.

maybe the back bevel depends on if the tool is used bevel up vs bevel down? I think Peter Galbert touches on this in his book.
I see/feel no downside to a small back bevel as shown here for bevel down usage. I don't personally use bevel up knives much, so no opinion there.
