I’ve mentioned this before, and I’ll start with it here. I scrape as little as possible. Ideally no scraping. Scraping leads to sanding. Sanding leads to mushy shapes and muddling the cutting tool work. I keep the scraper put aside unless it’s vital.

And with this chair it was needed. There is tear out that needs fixing and a few dings in places only the card scraper can reach. So it’s part of the prep team on this one, though I’m not thrilled about it.

Within this post, I am completing the small details and making the final touches before adding the finish. I finish the chair before weaving in the seat, whenever possible. This is my preference since it both coats the seat rungs to the rest of the chair and avoids the risk of getting stain/oil/finish on the woven seat.

This also means trimming the feet before sitting in the chair. I like these chairs around 16 1/2” at the front rung and that’s where I put this one.

Prep:

  • find and remove all glue

  • add pegs, wedges, and pins (as needed)

  • flush or dome the pegs

  • trim the feet

  • add chamfers

  • scrape surfaces and the final refinement

  • sand

  • finish
