[Teaching season begins in earnest in a few weeks. I’ll be at Sanborn Mills in Loudon, New Hampshire for a stick chair class in late April. Then my classes begin in May within my shop here in Waldoboro. There are still spaces for my chairmaking classes. The Hoop Stool class is waitlisted at this point. Send a message if you’re interested in joining one.]

There’s work happening in the shop. Slow work, but good stuff. Sometimes I forget to share the progress along the way. I enjoy taking and sharing the pretty final images. But I know plenty of readers like the progress more than the glossy final shots.

So today’s post is an update. What’s on the bench, what’s coming along, and the next shop improvement.

At least half of my current making time is spent on a project in a space above the shop. I’m painting, acting as a helper to the carpenter putting in the hardwood floors, and gearing up to tile a bathroom.

It’s been nice working alongside skilled carpenters…they work at a much faster and at a freer pace than I do in the shop. It’s impressive to see them flow through challenges (the staircase, for example) that would stop me in my tracks. In fact, it’s all I can do to keep up the minor tasks that are my responsibility.

On the bench is a Shaker stand and a stick chair.

First the cherry stand:

This is the first stand I’ve built. Six pieces of wood and a spider to support the sliding dovetails.
